JAUNTING CARS IN DUBLIN

The following images are from the book "King's Empire" published in 2 volumes the early 1900s. The photographs were taken at the height of the British Empire. The books are available in higher resolution for download as PDF ebooks at www.ozebook.com

JAUNTING CARS IN DUBLIN. Into what land has not the fame of the Jaunting Car penetrated ? It has been sung by the poet and described by the historian. A cynic has declared that it is the only conveyance in the world in which the wheels are kept dry at the expense of the legs of the passengers. But whatever its demerits, whatever its merits, in Ireland the Jaunting Car reigns supreme, and the Irish are beyond question the ".r-drivingist nation" in the world. Nor, while speaking of the car, should all mention of the driver be omitted. The " jarvey " has a long-established reputation for wit and humour ; and those who know Ireland will be inclined to admit that he shows himself worthy of his reputation. The fine new buildings of the Museum of Science and Art form the background of the picture. (Page 14.)
